Vail Valley man injured in hash oil explosion

EAGLE-VAIL — Colorado’s marijuana industry has taken off with a bang — literally.An Eagle-Vail man said a malfunctioning valve in his legal hash oil cooking system caused an explosion Wednesday afternoon.About two hours after the explosion, Ryan Wilhelm, 24, called the Vail Daily from the local hospital to tell his side of the story.Wilhelm said he was outside on the back porch of his Eagle-Vail townhome when a valve failed on his closed-loop hash oil system. The Grand Elk subdivision in Granby, on the rebound after years of financial struggles, is a complex mix of overlapping private and quasi-governmental entities.The 684-lot subdivision is owned variously by regular homeowners, developer Koelbel and Company, and in an odd twist the Grand Elk Improvement District, a quasi-governmental entity made up entirely of the Granby Board of Trustees.The development has had a tumultuous past. The first developer, Grand Elk LLC, was foreclosed on in 2009, leaving substantial outstanding debts. Citizens, stakeholders and local officials came out to offer their input on the Headwaters Trails Alliance’s Master Trails Plan in Winter Park on Tuesday, April 21.The meeting focused on the plan’s first subarea, which encompasses the southeastern portion of Grand County including the Fraser Valley.The original Master Trails Plan was developed in 1995, with the goal of establishing the Fraser to Granby Trail. The Headwaters Trails Alliance was formed at the same time to meet that goal.The plan has been revised multiple times since then, and in January 2015, HTA started its search for a consultant to help complete a …

Brigid Irish arraignment in District Court on April 30

Nearly one year after an arrest warrant was first issued for her, Brigid Irish will be back in District Court on Thursday, April 30, for an arraignment before 14th Judicial District Judge Mary Hoak.Irish is scheduled to appear at 2:15 p.m. Irish was in court on March 9 for an arraignment that was continued until April 30. During another arraignment appearance in late February, Irish informed Judge Hoak that she was dismissing her attorney William Frankfurt.During that appearance, Irish also informed the court that she would be seeking a public defender. Bessie Minor Swift Foundation awards literacy grants in Grand County

The Bessie Minor Swift Foundation, formed by the owners and founder of Swift Communications, awards grants to programs that promote literacy, reading and writing skills as well as programs that focus on the arts, languages and sciences.Since 2008, more than $300,000 has been awarded to organizations in the communities where Swift Communications conducts business, including Grand County where Swift owns the Sky-Hi News.This year in Grand County, the Foundation made two awards.The Friends of Grand County Library will receive a $2,000 grant for a program that focuses on increasing awareness of the importance of reading to preschool children and materials …

Granby plans road construction for summer months

Summer is coming and with it comes road construction season.The Town of Granby recently put out a request for bids for an asphalt milling and overlay project for three side streets in Granby.
