Run-off boosts Grand County rafting businesses

As river flows begin to ebb around mid-summer, rafters are looking back and fondly recalling the early part of the season. This year’s heavy snowpack, which has seen reservoirs on both sides of the Continental Divide fill, has also created a memorable rafting season. Mike Wasson, co-owner of Red Tail Rafting in Fraser, said his company has had an excellent year so far. “The water level is much better,” said Wasson. “The flow is much better than it has been in the last couple of years due to the good winter snowfall we’ve had. Tabernash — Church of the Eternal Hills announces the arrival of their new pastor, the Reverend Paula Daniel Steinbacher. “Pastor Paula,” as the parishioners have already begun calling her, received her master’s of divinity from Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa, Okla., and has spent the past 10 years of her ministry at churches in Kansas and Oklahoma. Former Middle Park runner finishes Hardrock 100-Mile Endurance Run

Amanda (Shumway) Grimes, a 1997 Middle Park High School graduate, made the 48-hour official finishing cut in the Hardrock 100-Mile Endurance run July 11-13 in the San Juan Mountains near Silverton. In addition to covering slightly more than 100 miles, the race features 32,992 feet of vertical gain and overall some 67,000 feet of elevation change, never falling below 7,500 feet and topping out a nearly 14,000 feet. More than 1,200 endurance runners applied for the 140 race slots. Grimes, who was part of the MPHS cross country team and now lives in Steamboat Springs, finished the race in 47 …

To the citizens of Grand County: Recently, I have been accused of theft and my ethics have been questioned. The accusers point to mileage reimbursements and being paid a stipend. I have consulted the legal staffs of both the River District and Grand County about how I handled these reimbursements. They said what I already knew: The questioned stipends and reimbursements did not violate the authority or policies of those entities.
