The movie adaption of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit hits theaters December 14 and critics and fans are already raving about it. A prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey retains the series' larger-than-life atmosphere as, once again, the fate of Middle Earth rests in the hands of a hobbit. Before you head to the theater to watch director Peter Jackson's epic film, it's time to read (or re-read) this Tolkien classic, first published in 1937. Bilbo Baggins' quest for treasure on the Lonely Mountain remains a thrilling adventure for readers young and old.
