History of the Granby Library 2004-2005

June 4 – Destruction by bulldozer
The Granby Library was destroyed on June 4 th by a man driving an armed and armored bulldozer. Thirteen buildings in Granby were damaged or destroyed that day, including the Town Hall, which housed the Granby Library. The library was located in the basement of the Town Hall, but plans were already in the works for a new library building. Following the destruction of the Town Hall, construction plans for the new library building were accelerated.

June 8 – Evacuation of contents begins
The destruction occurred on a Friday, and we began to remove materials from the library the following Tuesday. Looking at the building from the outside, onlookers were amazed that anything was able to be recovered from the building at all. Since the library was in the basement, it took a good share of the damage to the building – although the library was not really the target for destruction. In addition to the damage from the bulldozer, materials were lost due to water damage because it had rained during that interval and rainwater came in through the destroyed walls.

June 8 - Reopening of the Granby Library
The Granby Library reopened in a temporary location in the Elementary School Library. This would be the location of the library through the summer of 2004.

June-July-August – Inventory and recovery of materials
During the months of June, July, and August inventory was done of the materials recovered from the Granby Library. Temporary storage of most of the recovered contents and most of the inventory process was done at the old Middle School, which at the time also housed the Indian Peaks Charter School.

July 31 – Charette Community Input Workshop
Input on the design of the new Granby Library was obtained from the community through a charette community input workshop. The workshop was facilitated by Tammy Eatough.

August 3 – Branch Manager hired
Cindy Eubank was hired as the new Branch Manager for the Granby Library.

August 6 – 1940s Swing Dance & Dessert Box Social.
This event was the most successful fundraiser ever for the Granby Library. Funds raised went to the building fund for the new Granby Library.

August 16-August 28 – The Granby Library is closed for relocation The Granby Library was closed August 16 through August 28 as shelves and furnishings were set up in a modular at 151 Mesa Street, which is on the corner of the parking lot of the Elementary School. Materials were moved and shelved with the assistance of staff and many community volunteers.

August 30 – Reopening of the Granby Library
The Granby Library opens in its new temporary home in a modular
structure at 151 Mesa Street.

September 7 – New Youth Services Librarian begins
Gina Ricketts started as Youth Services Librarian for the Granby Library.

September 30 – Grand Opening
Despite rainy and cold weather, the community turned out in large numbers for the Grand Opening for the Granby Library. A BBQ was held at the lunchroom of the elementary school, and attendees were also treated to music by Tim Connelly. Dessert and tours were offered at the library. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held and was attended by community and GCLD dignitaries.

October 8 and 10; December 7 and 9 – Focus Groups for the new Granby Library
The architectural team selected by the Granby Library Building
Committee elicited further input from the community through a series of focus groups.

The Granby Library moves forward, thanks to the assistance of many.
The Granby Library was the recipient of many generous donations of books from both near and far. The Boulder Country Day School, the Western Writers of America, and Pitkin County Public Library made lovely donations of books and materials to help us continue to serve our patrons, as did many others. Many volunteers also donated countless hours of time to assist in the recovery of materials and the reopening of the library to serve our community. Many thanks to all who made this possible!
